In spite of the country wide worship of the Goddess, women are still stigmatised and dis- respected by the very traditions surrounding this culture. Nita Kumar questions whether the goddess is even a feminist as she currently doesn’t stand for women or their bodily experiences such as periods. In this project I question how socio-cultural and religious insight be used to redefine the binaries of modernity and tradition in order to aid women’s empowerment.
